Build a Raised Garden Bed This Weekend — No Experience, No Problem

Raised garden beds grow more food in less space, drain better than ground soil, warm up faster in spring, and keep weeds and pests out. They’re also one of the easiest weekend builds you can do — even if you’ve never picked up a saw before.

This guide walks you through building a simple 4×8 foot raised bed from scratch for under $60.

Materials List

  • (3) 2×10×8 cedar or pine boards
  • (1) 2×10×4 cedar or pine board (or cut one 8-foot board in half)
  • (4) 4×4 corner posts, 12 inches each
  • Exterior wood screws (2.5″)
  • Drill + drill bit
  • Level
  • Landscape fabric (optional)
  • Garden soil + compost

Why cedar? Cedar resists rot naturally without chemical treatment. It costs slightly more than pine but lasts 10–15 years vs. 3–5 for untreated pine.

Step 1 — Choose Your Location

Pick a spot that gets at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Avoid low areas where water pools.

Level the ground roughly — you don’t need it perfect, just no major slopes. Remove grass if present.

Step 2 — Cut Your Boards

For a standard 4×8 bed:

  • 2 long sides: 8 feet (no cutting needed)
  • 2 short sides: cut two boards to 4 feet each

Your lumber yard or hardware store will often make these cuts for free.

Step 3 — Attach Corner Posts

Stand up two boards in an L-shape. Place a 4×4 corner post at the inside corner. Pre-drill to prevent splitting, then drive 2 screws through the board into the post.

Repeat for all four corners. You now have the frame.

Step 4 — Level and Position

Set the frame in your chosen spot. Use a level to check all four sides. Adjust by adding or removing soil underneath.

Optional: lay landscape fabric inside the base to suppress weeds while still allowing drainage.

Step 5 — Fill With Soil

The best filling mix for raised beds:

  • 60% topsoil
  • 30% compost
  • 10% perlite or coarse sand (for drainage)

Fill to 1–2 inches below the top edge. This prevents soil from washing out during watering.

Step 6 — Plant and Water

Water the bed thoroughly before planting to settle the soil. You’re ready to grow.

Best first crops for beginners: lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, herbs, green beans — all thrive in raised beds.

Cost Breakdown

Item Estimated Cost
Lumber (cedar) $35–$45
Screws $5
Landscape fabric $8
Soil + compost $20–$30
Total $68–$88
